At MWC 2024, we had the rare opportunity to experience Google’s Project Starline, an ambitious attempt to redefine virtual meetings by making remote conversations feel as natural as in-person ones. Unlike traditional video calls, Starline’s ultra-realistic projection captures depth, eye contact, and facial expressions with stunning accuracy—making it feel like the person is actually sitting right across from you.
A Surreal & Exclusive Experience
Project Starline is still in its prototype phase, and Google has kept it under wraps—no photos were allowed, and instead of making a huge, flashy banner to attract visitors, they built a small, enclosed room inside their booth. The experience was available only to those who had booked in advance, making it one of the most exclusive demos at MWC.
We were lucky enough to be among the few who got to try it, and the experience was so realistic that we actually had to ask the person in the other room if they were real or just a projection!
What Makes Project Starline Different?

Unlike conventional video conferencing tools, Starline is designed to feel as close to face-to-face communication as possible. Here’s what makes it unique:
True-to-life 3D projection – Not just a screen, but a full-depth, real-time holographic experience.
Natural eye contact & expressions – Makes remote interactions feel less robotic and more personal.
No headsets required – Unlike VR-based solutions, Starline creates immersion without extra wearables.
A complete hardware & software package – Designed for seamless integration in workspaces.
What’s Next for Project Starline?
Google has confirmed that Starline is still in its prototype phase, but they plan to launch it by the end of the year. The initial rollout will target B2B customers, in collaboration with HP, focusing on remote work and business communications.
As hybrid work becomes the norm, technologies like Starline could revolutionize the way we collaborate, connect, and conduct meetings—making virtual conversations as real as sitting in the same room.
